The descendants of Gregorio and Ana Esparza will be gathering this summer, July 10, 2010, in Pleasanton Texas at the Pleasanton River Park. It is already well known that Gregorio Esparza fought and died at the Alamo. We also know that his wife, Ana Salazar Esparza, was in the Alamo during the siege and battle. We know that Gregorio was the only Tejano to be given a christian burial. We also know that they took their children into the Alamo with them.
Ana and the children all survived. Ana, after having met with Santa Anna had to raise her daughter, Maria de Jesus Castro, and her three sons, Enrique, Manuel and Francisco by herself.
Before the 1850's, Ana and Maria de Jesus had past away, leaving the boys without parents. The brothers went south to Atascosa County looking for a better life. Each of the brothers filed for and received 160 acres of Pre-Empted land. They, along with other families in the area, built the small community of San Agustin. The community has been gone for sometime now, but its memory will be celebrated at this reunion. Lets all come Home to Atascosa County in July.
